The UNSO Traveler — launched 2024, carrying 20 children and 6 Mentors — re-enters Earth orbit after 36 years. Aboard: 600 inhabitants, 200 years of sovereign governance, and a Cold Fusion reactor every faction on Earth wants.
The Traveler entered orbit in 2060. Within 48 hours, every faction on Earth had made contact. None of them knew what they were dealing with.
The ship launched in 2024 carrying twenty children and six adult Mentors, funded by pre-Upheaval consortium capital, powered by a CFR-4 Cold Fusion reactor of revolutionary design. The Mentors died in the third week. The children ran the ship. They built a governance structure, a culture, and a population of six hundred — and a coexistence arrangement with gene-forged variants that escaped containment in year eighty.
They do not consider themselves refugees. They do not consider themselves lost. They are a sovereign entity in a four-hundred-meter sphere, and they have been running their own governance for two centuries without input from anyone on the surface.
The ship is organized into three zones. The Outer Hull is Aberrant territory: dark, cold, gravity inverted in sections, marked with bioluminescent territorial language that operators walk through at their peril. The Mid-Sphere is the operations layer — the Bridge, the Library, the CFR-4 reactor stacks on Engineering Deck G, and the Breeding Annex sub-deck that does not appear on any map the Travelers have shared with outside parties. The Inner Core is where the six hundred actually live: Deck F quarters built on two centuries of generational domestic architecture, and the Arboretum on Deck I — a dome filled with trees, transparent ceiling showing deep space, where the Travelers bring their meals and their dead.
Every faction wants the CFR-4 technical data. Every genetics faction wants the Breeding Annex — two centuries of uncontrolled gene-forge evolution, fully documented, with no analog anywhere on Earth. The Travelers know exactly what they have and what it is worth.
Captain Reeves Finn-Adelaide commands from the Bridge on Deck C. The Council nominally governs from seven seats. The CFR-4 reactor — running for two hundred years on a maintenance rotation built by five generations of people who learned by doing — is the real power. Lose one module and everything changes.
The Traveler launched in 2024, a generation ship built by a world that assumed it would be there to greet the return. Orbital insertion completed on schedule, above a planet that had reorganized in its absence. Every faction made contact within 48 hours. What each of them asked has not been published.
