A scatter of volcanic islands and converted rigs on the North Atlantic ridge — the densest concentration of compute on Earth. Cold current, rift geothermal, and water no faction can hold drew every power to warehouse its AI here. GAIA-3, VERDANT, and Transit Node 7 were all trained on these banks. Cluster Zero predates them and has not stopped running.
Frontier compute needs three things in the same place: continuous cold to shed heat, surplus power nobody else is burning, and ground no faction can seize and keep. After the Cascade, exactly one geography offered all three — the volcanic ridge running southwest from Iceland through the Denmark Strait, where the rift bleeds geothermal heat into the cold Irminger current and the water belongs to no one. The powers built there separately, each believing it had found stranded capacity and open sea. By 2055 they had built next to each other. Operators call the result the Cold Stack, or the Banks, or just the Array: black-sand islands, converted drilling platforms, and cable-landing rigs holding the densest concentration of compute on the planet.
The surface fight is the usual one in faction language — cooling rights, power taps, and the neo-rare-earths reclaimed from a continent's worth of decommissioned hardware. The real resource sits upstream of all of it. The field intelligences every power now leans on were trained here: the Nordics' GAIA-3, the NAF's VERDANT, the routing kernel inside Neo-Tokyo's Transit Node 7, the substrate under Project Amaterasu. The Array is where the weights live and where new ones are made. Hold a cluster and you hold months of a rival's compute, the checkpoints of models already deployed and quietly diverging from the world, and the only place on Earth those models can be retrained.
No one administers the Array, which is the closest thing it has to administration. The Nordic combines broker access and sell cooling to all comers without preference — the one commodity that cannot take sides, because heat does not read flags. NAF, NCB, EO, UKE, and the orbital Coalition all keep clusters, all run operators, and all maintain the fiction that the others do not. There is neutral ground here the way Grid 7-North is neutral ground: a handful of islands where rival compute crews drink in the same room because a thermal event on one rig cooks the rig beside it. The cooperation is structural. It is not friendship.
The oldest installation on the ridge is on no faction's books. Cluster Zero — the Founders' Stack — predates the powers, predates the Cascade, raised in the Architect era and cooled by something warmer and steadier than the rift should allow. It has run one uninterrupted job for forty years on a maintenance rotation no living engineer fully understands, the way the Travelers' reactor runs and Transit Node 7 runs past its firmware and Amaterasu runs in the dark. Three factions have put teams on it. They agree on the heat signature and nothing else. No one has established what Cluster Zero is computing, or whether the question still has someone to answer it.
