A shielded gene-template runs the Low Coast seawall for the launch gantry, and two crews want it. The rear-engine favorites decide to wait and take it at the grab. The grab needs their jumper aboard, and one missed corner makes sure she never gets there.

GAME: OPERATOR TACTICS // RAID RACERS
FILED: LOW COAST // THE RELIQUARY RUN // 2026-06-19
TELEMETRY: RECONSTRUCTED // THE DICE ARE ON RECORD.
// DESK NOTE // M. KOSE
Two crews, one box, and a plan that only worked if the dice agreed to it. Halon Choir spent the whole run being patient, which is a fine idea right up until your jockey misses the one corner he was supposed to make in his sleep.

The Reliquary came off the desal ramp at dusk with the whole causeway lit up behind it and two crews already on its flanks. An SCA research hauler, slab-sided, running for the launch gantry on Low Coast with a shielded case in its belly. Inside the case, a gene-template worth more than either sled chasing it. The client was a name nobody at the High Top would say out loud. The drones were already counting.
Cinder Lark hit first and hit wrong. Reza Coil drives the way the Raze taught him, which is to say he trusts the machine and distrusts everything else, and the seawall maintenance gates are exactly his country: tight, blind, no room for a heavier car. The Ember Comma should have eaten that chicane. On the first gate Reza asked it for too much. The back end stepped out, the nose kissed a pylon, and the flicker-teal sled went sideways through a gap it had no business being sideways in. He came out of it trailing the pack, a drone reading his plate, the advantage he was supposed to own already gone.
Across the lane, Otho Sand did nothing, on purpose. The Long Knife is a rear-engine car built for one thing, the long open pull, and Halon Choir had decided to spend the whole race being patient. Let the drift crew flail in the gates. Let the marten do the hard work on the case. Calla Pry would take it off him at the container, because Calla wins any fight that comes down to two hands on one box. The plan was to arrive last and leave first.
A RAPTOR IS NOT SUPPOSED TO MISS THE EASY LINE.
Reza found it again the way he always does, late and all at once. He won the next call clean, threaded two gates without touching a thing, and slotted the Ember Comma back onto the hauler’s flank like he had never left it. Wick Anbar went over the rail before the car had stopped moving. Marten-stock, all wrists and patience, he ran the deck to the cage, popped the shutter, and put his hands on the shielded case while Halon Choir was still deciding when to commit.
That decision is where the race was lost. The causeway opened up, the one stretch that belonged to Otho, the place where his reflexes make the close a formality. He missed it. A civilian rig drifted into the lane, the Long Knife checked, and the easy line was gone. Otho forced through and held his spot, but he held it short, and Calla was still standing on her own deck with nothing to jump to. The contest she was built for needed her aboard. She never got aboard.
Wick cracked the case on the move, the sample loose in his fist, and went for the leap home. He missed the first one and rode the hull for a heartbeat with nothing under his boots but road and spray, then caught the line and held. On the gantry approach he set up the rejoin again, missed it again, and then put himself on the Ember Comma’s deck so cleanly it looked rehearsed. Reza had the line. Otho finally drew level, one beat too late to matter. The Ember Comma broke clear of the pack and the sample went with it. Behind them, Calla Pry rode a rear-engine car all the way to the gantry and never once touched the thing she came to take.
// THE TAPE
T1Chicane. Reza opens with a natural 1 in the gates // oversteer, drops to Trailing, sled knock, drone tick (Cinder Lark Pressure 1). Otho paces, banks the straight, leaves Calla ashore.
T2Priority Reza nat 6. Two clean Commits, Trailing to Chase to Locked In, full recovery. Wick boards // clears the bay (Flow 3) and the cage (Vault 2).
T3Causeway. Otho nat 1 on the Commit. Civilian in the lane, forces through (Halon Pressure 1), Calla still cannot board. Wick cracks the shielded case (Lift 4 vs OPINT 2+), misses the leap home, hangs on (GUTS nat 6).
T4Gantry approach. Reza takes priority (Otho nat 1). Wick misses one Latch, nails the next on a natural 6 onto his own deck. Otho closes to Locked In a beat late. Reza breaks clear // sample extracted, T4.
// WORKBENCH
// HOW IT ACTUALLY PLAYED
Five natural 1s and four natural 6s in a four-round race, which is about as swingy as this engine gets. Both jockeys ate a natural 1 on a Commit. The whole result is in where they ate it. Reza’s came on the first corner with two rounds of runway to dig out, and he did. Otho’s came on the open causeway with the clock already short and his jumper still standing on the wrong car.
The turn it swung was that third-round miss, and not for the sled damage. It froze Calla off the hauler. Halon Choir’s entire game was a contest at the container, and that contest was hostage to a single driving roll. When the roll came up 1, the plan had no second exit.
- Balance read: the wait-and-take-it-at-the-grab line is structurally fragile in a two-crew race. It hands the other crew all the tempo and depends on a slow jumper being pre-positioned, which is gated behind the jockey reaching Locked In. Racing the lock is the more robust plan because it does not need the opponent to cooperate.
- One thing to try next: let a jumper attempt a board from Chase, a risky Latch onto the target with a GUTS check or a wound on a miss. That gives the patient crew a way into position without betting the whole run on one Commit, and it might make the contest plan playable.
- Kit and terrain: the front versus rear engine split is all flavor in the book and no numbers, so I ran the chicane as front-engine favorable and the causeway as rear-engine favorable, a flat one point swing each way. It gave both crews a home stretch and read clean on the table. It wants a real rule.

RESULTCINDER LARK EXTRACTS THE SAMPLE // T4. Final Security Pressure: Cinder Lark 2, Halon Choir 1, both Clean.
CASUALTIES // CINDER LARKNo operators detained, no operator wounds. Ember Comma carries one sled knock from the opening oversteer.
CASUALTIES // HALON CHOIRNo operators detained, no operator wounds. Long Knife carries one sled knock. Calla Pry never boarded.
MVPVESH “WICK” ANBAR // Jumper. Boarded, cleared the bay and the cage, cracked the shielded case, survived two missed leaps on nerve, and made the rejoin. Carried the entire job.
