Three weeks ago the desk pulled a halted ledger rewrite off a node under the Corva Basin and found it had been copying itself to somebody nobody could name. The copy had an address. The address had rails under it. Rampart took a squad to a rock cut on the coast line to stop it leaving, held five turns against two walkers, and opened a car that had nothing in it.

Kose here. We have been carrying an unopened question since the twentieth — Espinoza's rewrite was mirroring to a second holder and stopped at ninety-one percent, and the desk has been sitting on the packet since. Marlow took the follow-up because Solveng has run that thread twice and I wanted a colder pair of eyes on it. This is the first Iron Line we have filed in a month, and it is a strange one to come back on: a textbook denial, five clean turns, nobody on our side in the ground, and an ending that gives you less than you started with. Play it anyway. Losing the prize while winning the game is a real result and the ruleset should be able to say so.

A cut is a good place to stop a train and a bad place to be standing when one decides not to stop. Vantry is two hundred meters of blasted rock with a single track down the middle and no siding, which means everything that enters it is committed. That cuts both directions. The squad that holds the walls has nowhere to fall back to either.
Rampart picked it anyway, and she picked it three weeks after a job that cost her nothing and a job before that which cost her a great deal, and she has been running lines like a person who has decided that geography is more reliable than intelligence. Hard to argue. The intelligence on this one was a halted file. Circuit pulled a rewrite off a pump-house node under the Corva Basin on the twentieth and found it had been copying itself, the whole time, to an address that resolved to rolling stock. Not a building. A consist. The second holder was not a person with a door. The second holder was a car that kept moving.
So the desk did the only clean thing available and put a squad where the rails narrow.
The consist came in slow at first light with a maintenance flag on the lead unit and two walkers riding the flats behind it, which is a great deal of escort for track inspection. Rampart let the lead unit get four zones deep before Kiln blew the bed behind it. That is the whole shape of an Iron Line denial: you do not stop the train at the mouth, you stop it in the middle, where the walls take away its options and the walkers have to fight uphill in both senses.
YOU DO NOT STOP IT AT THE MOUTH. YOU STOP IT WHERE IT CANNOT TURN.
The walkers dismounted into the cut and the game got honest. A Section gun in a rock corridor is an argument that does not need to be accurate. Tare lost her first shelf position in about eleven seconds and spent the rest of the engagement moving, which is the correct read and looks like cowardice on the tape. She never fired twice from the same stone. Four kills off four different positions.
Turn two the fog came up on a 6, and everybody on both sides stopped being able to see, and this is where Rampart won the engagement without shooting anybody. She pushed Kiln forward under the fog band to the second charge site instead of holding him back for the boarding action. Doctrine says hold your Breacher for the objective. Doctrine assumes you will get an objective. She spent him on the track bed and put a second break in the rails eighty meters ahead of the lead unit, and from that moment the consist was not a train anymore. It was six stationary boxes with legs walking around them.
Reyes drew the walkers off the flats and did it the ugly way, on foot, with a vehicle he never got into. He walked into a Section arc on purpose on turn three and took a mortal wound for it, and both walkers turned to finish him and gave Tare and Rampart four unanswered activations against exposed knee actuators. Sunday burned her only stabilize on him in the drainage adit while the fight was still going. He is alive. He will not run a Navigation match for a month.
Both walkers went down in the cut. Zero Breakthrough tokens. Line Integrity closed at four of six. On any sheet the desk keeps, that is a five-turn denial run about as well as this squad has run anything.
Then they walked the consist and opened the receiver car.
It was clean. Not stripped, not burned — clean the way a room is clean when somebody left with time to spare. The rack was there, the cradle was there, the power was live and the cradle was warm. The drive was gone. Circuit, listening from the basin, said the mirror had halted at ninety-one percent on the twentieth and had not moved a byte since, which means whatever left that car left it before the desk ever knew the car existed, and did not leave in a hurry, and did not leave by rail.
Kiln found the transfer slip folded in the cradle housing. No name on it. A consignment mark, numerals only, and a countersign block — and the countersign block matches the routing on a broker sheet the desk has already photographed once this month, from a shed on the other side of the world, on a job where two crews got hired three hops apart and told they were competing.
Rampart read it twice, put it in her jacket, and said the sentence the desk has been chewing on since: we did not lose a race, we were never in one.

SETApproach in the dark, three zones. TACT 5 / 4 / 6, no contact, no alert. Rampart banks 2 Tempo. Kiln pre-places charge one at zone 4 (DC 4, rolled 5). Circuit remote, one Overwatch relay, no direct actions.
T1Consist enters at half speed. Rampart holds until the lead unit clears zone 4, then fires the charge: rail break confirmed. Walkers dismount, Section gun opens on the high shelf. Tare GUTS 4, holds, but loses the position (Suppressed, forced relocate). No Breakthrough. Integrity 6/6.
T2Fog band 6, rolls in, all ranged at -1 for both sides. Rampart spends 1 Tempo to reactivate Kiln and pushes him to zone 2 under the fog. Charge two (DC 5 under fog, rolled nat 6) — second rail break, consist now boxed. Contract shooters volley into the adit: Sunday takes 1 FW. Integrity 5/6.
T3Reyes walks the Section arc deliberately. Walker gunnery 5, hits, 1 MW — Reyes on the mortal track. Both walkers commit to him. Tare from a new shelf: knee actuator nat 6, walker A Structure 4 to 2. Rampart closes, FIGHT 5, Structure 2 to 1. Sunday stabilize on Reyes, 4, holds. Integrity 4/6.
T4Walker A falls in the cut (Rampart, 3, just enough). Walker B shield-arms the shelf and pushes for the far marker — Breakthrough check 2, short by one zone. Tare 5 into the exposed hip. Kiln melee on the leg, nat 1, thrown, 1 FW. Integrity 4/6.
T5Walker B down (Tare, 6, structure zero). Contract shooters break for the mouth, six of eight clear, not contested. Turn cap. Zero Breakthrough tokens. Boarding action unopposed. Receiver car opened: cradle warm, drive absent, transfer slip recovered.

Marlow filed this as a win and the sheet agrees with him, so let me be the one to say the uncomfortable part: Iron Line cannot currently score what happened here. The scenario pays out on Breakthrough tokens denied. The squad denied all of them. The scenario's own after-action table hands them top-tier payout for a run that recovered an empty box. Nothing in the ruleset can tell the difference between the objective and the container the objective was supposed to be in.
- The turn it swung: turn two, and it swung on a doctrine break. Holding the Breacher back for the boarding action is the printed advice and it is wrong in a cut. The second rail break is what converted a fighting withdrawal into a boxed consist, and it only existed because Rampart spent Tempo to reactivate Kiln under fog cover rather than bank it for the objective phase. The objective phase turned out to be worth nothing. She could not have known that. She was right anyway.
- Dice luck vs decisions: unusually little variance either way. One natural 6 (charge two under fog) and one natural 1 (Kiln's melee) roughly cancel. Everything else landed in the middle band. This is what a well-positioned Iron Line looks like — the terrain does the work and the dice only decide the cost.
- Balance read: Structure 4 walkers in a corridor with no flanking room are undercosted for the defender and overcosted for the attacker. Neither walker ever got to use the shield arm the way it is meant to be used, because in a cut there is no oblique to shield against. Two walkers in open country is a hard fight. Two walkers in Vantry is a demolition job with extra steps. If you are running Engagement 06, consider giving the attacker a dismount option before zone 4 or the defender simply wins the map at setup.
- Reyes and the deliberate arc-walk: the rules permit it and do not price it. Walking into a known Section arc to buy four unanswered activations is a legal move that trades one operator's mortal track for a quarter of the enemy's turn economy, and right now the trade is far too good. Proposal for the backlog: a deliberate draw should cost a Tempo token as well as the wound. Make the player pay for it out of the same pool everything else comes from.
- Scoring proposal: add an Empty Hand result to the Iron Line after-action table. Line held, objective absent. Pays the tactical tier, pays nothing on the contract tier, and — this is the part I actually want — flags the scenario as unfinished so the campaign sheet carries it forward instead of closing it out. This engagement is not over. The sheet should not say it is.
Rulings this run, all logged. Fog band applied simultaneously to both sides as a flat -1; the reference implies but does not state symmetry. Reactivating an operator via Tempo under a suppression effect is undefined, and we allowed it. A boarding action against an uncontested consist has no procedure at all, so we narrated it. And the transfer slip is not an in-game object — the desk put it on the table because it belongs to the story, not the scenario. Three gaps and one deliberate cheat, all on record.

CARRIED FORWARDThe mirror halted at 91% on 2026-07-20 and has not moved since. Whatever came out of that cradle left on foot, before the desk knew the car existed. Engagement logged OPEN.
