In a Sub-Level 2 club, the headline act is a gene-forged body losing its signal on schedule, and the house bills her for the meds that keep her upright. Dean Voss went down to the greenroom, where the booker lied warmly and the steadiest thing in the room was her hands.

RUN HOT

Voss came back from Sub-Level 2 owing the house nothing, which is more than the headliner can say. We run this because the best-lit body in Neo-Tokyo this season is being expensed against a future she is unlikely to reach, and the lighting was very good at making that look like a choice. Go if you must. Just know the cover charge is the cheapest thing you will pay in that room, and she pays the rest.

The greenroom sits below the room everyone paid to be in, which sits below the street, which sits below a water table the city stopped pretending was a problem. Sub-Level 2. You reach it on a freight lift that smells like ozone and wet rope, and the booker rides down with me to tell me twice that she loves the show. He says it the way you confirm a shipment you already know is short.

She is the act. The marquee upstairs calls her THE TEST PATTERN, white letters on dead-channel blue, and the line for it goes up the stairs and along the wet brick. Her name is Wick. She is entertainment grade. Somebody built her years ago for a resort light show, panels seeded under the dermis that were meant to glow on a cue, warm and even, a body you could read a menu by. The spec held for about six years. Then it started keeping its own hours.

Now the panels fire without her. They strobe and drop frames, and up close it reads like a screen losing signal. She calls it cooking off, flat, the way a hauler I worked with named Pella used to report a number she had stopped feeling. The booker calls it her gift. The crowd calls it the best thing in Sub-Level 2, and they are right, which is the part that sits wrong in the chest.

There is a hard case open on the counter that does not belong in a greenroom. A garage-sale clinic, mismatched ampoules, a cooling line, a med tech named Pim with the steadiest hands I have seen since I stopped running load-outs. Between sets Pim brings her down. Suppression meds, the line, forty minutes of being a person before she goes back to being a signal. I ask who pays for the kit. The booker answers before she can. The house does, he says. We take care of our people.

THE HOUSE DOESN'T PAY HER TO PERFORM. IT PAYS HER TO COOK OFF ON SCHEDULE.

The kit is not care. It is a lien. The meds Pim runs into her arm are billed against bookings she has not played yet, at a markup the house sets, on a tab the house keeps. She is current on nothing. Every set pays down the set before it. I have seen this shape in port crews and rig crews and once in a whole town on the salt line. You owe the company store and the company store is the only store. They have just never run it through a body before, where the worker and the inventory are the same wet thing.

The name belongs to the house as well. THE TEST PATTERN is venue property, registered and merchandised, and if Wick walks the act stays and they put another cooking-off forged inside the letters. She knows this. When the booker stepped out to take a call she told me she had already met the next one. Younger. Glows steadier. Maybe four good years before her own panels start keeping their own hours and the line forms for her instead.

Upstairs the room is genuinely good, and I want to be honest about that. Splice-punk kids in salvaged light rigs, dead credentials worn on chains, a bar selling something blue that is mostly optimism. They are not cruel. Most of them believe they are witnessing something, and they are. The thing they are witnessing is a maintenance schedule with a body attached, lit beautifully and sold by the set. The lighting is the alibi.

I asked the booker the question you are supposed to ask. Does the act shorten her. He did something with his mouth that was almost honest. Everything down here shortens everybody, he said. At least she gets a marquee. I have heard better men say worse, and worse men say it kinder, and I wrote it down and bought my own drink so I would owe the house nothing. You can do that for yourself in that room. You cannot do it for her.

The detail I keep is her hands. Steady. Genuinely steady, the one quiet part of her while the rest flickered through the brief. When Pim came back in, the two of them did the small involuntary thing forged do when they clock each other, the half-second face that is not for any camera. Then Wick stood, the panels caught, and she walked up toward the blue letters and the line, to be a screen losing signal in front of people who paid to watch it go.

A BODY GOING DARK ON A PAYMENT PLAN, IN FRONT OF A PAYING LINE.
