The northern ports are full of NAF cold-weather shells at a third of the issue price. Most of them keep you warm right up until the one night it actually matters. Here is how to find the seam before the cold does.

We do not usually run instructions. Our readers prefer to learn the expensive way and tell the story at parties afterward. But Drift came back from the Banks with a coat that failed a seam test on my desk and a body count she keeps politely filing under "attrition," so this month you may read the manual and pretend you always knew. Wear the real one. Lie about the price.

Okay so here is the thing nobody at the port says out loud. The cold-weather shell that keeps a NAF quartermaster warm and the one folded on the pallet at the Breakers' Yard look like the same coat. Same gray membrane. Same boreal mark embossed over the heart. Same lot code stamped beside it. One costs three weeks of dock wages. The other costs an afternoon, and for about nine months of the year you genuinely cannot tell them apart. That gap is the most interesting number in the whole port, once you work out what it is paying for.

So let's get the object right first, because it is simpler than the vendors want it to be. You are not buying a coat. You are buying a sealed pocket of dead air that your body heats once and then keeps all night. A real Boreal-pattern shell holds that air with a taped aerogel membrane and welded seams, and the air stays where you put it. A fake holds it with glued seams and a batting that only looks like aerogel under a kiosk lamp. It works fine in a warehouse. It works fine on the ferry. It quits on the first night the wind comes off the Array and finds the glue.

And the glue always gets found. The cold is patient like that. It reads the coat the way the old hands tell you to read a building: forget the label, read the seam, the seam doesn't lie.

THE COLD
DOESN'T READ
PRICE TAGS.

Here are the tests. They are free, they take a minute each, and the vendor will let you run most of them while acting insulted, which is part of what you are paying for at a kiosk anyway.

First, the seam. Turn the shell inside out at the shoulder. A real seam is welded flat and taped over, one continuous gray ribbon you cannot catch with a fingernail. A fake seam is sewn and then glued, and glue lifts. Run a nail along it. If it crackles or peels, you are holding an afternoon's worth of coat. Put it down.

Second, the weight, and this one surprises people. The real shell is lighter. Aerogel is basically nothing! The counterfeit packs in batting to fake the loft, so it feels heavy and generous in your hand, like a deal you are winning. Heavy is the tell. You want the one that feels like it is barely there.

Third, the membrane. Pinch the panel over the chest and listen. Real membrane crackles, a dry papery sound, because it is a sealed film. Fake batting stays soft and quiet. A quiet coat is a lying coat.

Fourth, the stamp. Everyone copies the boreal mark, so the mark tells you nothing. Go to the lot code beside it. NAF burns the code into the membrane with heat, so you feel it before you read it. Counterfeiters print theirs, because heat-stamping costs more than the margin allows. Close your eyes and rub the code with your thumb. If your thumb feels nothing, your thumb just saved your hand.

Fifth, if the vendor is really pushing you, the cold soak. Ask to leave the shell against the container wall for ten minutes. Real membrane stays supple in the cold. Fake glue stiffens, and the whole seam line picks up a faint board-like resistance you can feel when you bend it. Corr, who runs the third container from the water at the Breakers' Yard, will tell you the cold soak is an insult to her merchandise. She is right. It is also the test her merchandise fails.

Now the part that should make you angry instead of just careful. The fakes are not the work of some clever ring. They come off the same coastal reconstruction lines that make the real ones, on the third shift, out of the rejected membrane the quartermaster would not sign for. The factory makes the coat, fails the coat, and sells the failure to the people standing outside the factory. Call the price gap what it actually is. A bet that you will be warm enough, often enough, that the one bad night gets filed under hard luck instead of fraud.

The Clearance Bin containers paint NO RETURNS on every door, and for once a vendor is being completely honest with you. The cold gives no returns either. So spend the three weeks of wages if you have them, or run the five tests on the cheap one and know exactly what you bought and what you are betting on it. Just stop letting the seam tell you in January what your thumb could have told you in the shop.
